So I was speaking to a friend about the videos we have been doing for NRA News the other day and I asked her about her perspective on how it is all going. Her background: though she was never technically anti-gun, she grew up in a household that vilified them. After working in a gun-related industry, she is now a gun owner and advocate, so I really appreciate and respect her perspective on the current gun conversation out there in the media.

Her answer to my question was that she thought it was cool that all of the commentators had different perspectives and has actually been surprised by some of our content. I said, “but do you think it is having an impact?” She replied, “ya know… what I think is starting to happen is that people are no longer listening to either side of the media when it comes to the topic of guns.”

Hmmm… interesting. Her response to my question got me thinking. My initial reaction is, “GOOD!! Now perhaps people will be thinking for themselves.” This could be a really positive thing for our side of the discussion. I truly believe that when gun skeptics or open-minded individuals actually see who we are and what we are all about, they will understand that being a part of the gun community is not so evil after all.

Anyway, it got me thinking… I have an incredibly cool and thoughtful group of readers. I’d really like your input on this. What are your thoughts on conventional wisdom regarding guns? How do you see the conversation going these days? Hit me back in the comments below.

One comment from “Peter” via email:

I think that most people really don’t think much about guns at all. In my experience, most people don’t really care one way or another, so that in everyday conversation, when the subject comes up, the response is something like, “Oh?”
Which gives us good folk a foot in the door, so to speak.
Example: I took some (all female) kids out to eat a couple of weeks ago as a reward for doing well at the range.
Cute as a box of puppies, en masse.
When the waitress figured out why we were discussing a bunch of targets laid out on the table, she didn’t freak out. She was interested!
As a result, three of the waitress are going to the range with me, as soon as our schedules permit.
New shooters! Yay!
And no pink in sight. Except for the grips on my carry nine.

She’s in the Army. She hunts. She sings opera. And I kinda want to ask her to be my best friend.

I’ve been on the fence about beauty pageants for quite a while. Are they good for women and our collective self image? Meh. I have my doubts. But this contestant has definitely got my attention. In this People Magazine article, Miss Kansas, Sgt. Theresa Vail explains that she wants to demonstrate to young women and girls that beauty comes from within. And while it is not the first time we’ve heard these words from a beauty contestant, coming from Sgt. Vail, the message takes on a whole new meaning.

“Nobody expects a soldier to be a beauty queen,” Vail says, “but I’m all about breaking stereotypes.”

She is a living example of the latest social mantra that “strong is the new beautiful,” and interestingly, she doesn’t shy away from the heavy stuff:

“I was bullied when I was a kid. It got so bad that I nearly took my own life … My dad [an Army dentist stationed in Germany] took me hunting with him and it saved my life. Ever since then, I’ve been an outdoors girl,” she says. “My passion is empowering girls through male-dominated outdoor sports.”
She adds, “I want to help them develop confidence, to let them know that they have what it takes to accomplish anything they want to accomplish. I know many young girls look at beauty candidates and think, ‘What a perfect life they have.’ But I want them to know that I haven’t led a perfect life. And that beauty comes from the inside.”

This one officially has my respect. And if that heartfelt message was just a little too sappy for you, not to worry. She exercises her badassery on a regular basis:

She’s also an expert M16 marksman, a bow hunter, a skydiver, a boxer and a mechanic. She finally had to stop motorcycle racing after breaking all the fingers in her right hand – a potential stumbling block, she decided, to reaching her goal of becoming an Army dentist. She can skin a deer, she has a great squirrel stew recipe (it features sauerkraut) and, one day, she hopes to hunt bear with her bow and arrow.

Seeing this paradigm shift in that bastion of beauty standards, The Miss America Pageant, is no small event and I look forward to seeing more women and girls proudly making shooting, hunting and, what the heck, even our armed forces a part of their identity.

Keep up the good work, Miss Kansas. We will be rooting for you.

UPDATE:

Though Theresa didn’t win the competition, she has made some great inroads in pop culture for women who shoot and hunt. Great job, Theresa! Can’t wait to see what you do in the year to come.

We had such a good time hanging out with the awesome chicks of Women’s Tactical Association and Alpha Girls on this shoot. Kim Heath is one of their bright shining stars up there in Chicago. This girl is the quintessential badass with a sense of humor as quick as those cat-like reflexes she uses to serve and protect as a police officer in Illinois. I have also personally seen this chick walk a high-fashion runway with ease and style. Expect much more from her at NRA Women’s Network.

Like many tomboy wannabes, I grew up walking that fine line between the desire to be really tough and respected by the boys and feeding my innate girlie-ness. Part of that toughness I so desperately sought to display would include acquiring, on purpose, a scorching West Texas sunburn. I wore peeling skin like a badge of honor. Tragic and gross, I know. I cringe when I think back on how poorly I treated my skin as a tween/teenager, which are the ages at which so much permanent sun damage occurs.

Hey, our primary concern here is safety, right? That safety means taking good, holistic care of yourself, which includes cancer prevention. Whether you are defending yourself from a bad guy or getting regular mammograms, the same objectives apply. We need you around, sister! And too many of us are seeing the signs of sun damage, including melanoma, at a very young age. Check out these videos from Birchbox to refresh yourself on the good habits you should maintain every day and especially while you are on the range:

For those of us who care about the safety of our families, valuables and firearms (read: everyone who reads this blog), this little innovation from Liberty Safe might just come in handy. The obvious use for this device is to keep your firearms and ammo out of the wrong hands and to be alerted immediately should someone gain access to them. From where I stand, this thing might just have a stroke of genius behind it. If nothing else, it will help you rest a little easier that your valuables are being watched, even if you aren’t around to do it. Check out the press release from the company here:

Revolutionary New Safe and Valuables Protection

Payson, Utah, May 9, 2013, Liberty Safe– World famous for their line of super tough reliable firearm safes www.libertysafe.com has devised a revolutionary portable and wireless alarm system in cooperation with Elertus Cloud Services.

SafElert is a compact 3x2x1-inch wireless hi-tech communications device you can employ in any existing safe or any other confined space including your dresser drawers, automobile, liquor cabinet, or even in your refrigerator to catch a secret snacker.

The SafElert is set into any safe or targeted area to be monitored; you arm it and go enjoy your life.

The SafElert will notify you if your safe (any safe) is jarred, hit, pried, moved, opened, over heated, the handle is jostled or most anything else out of the ordinary. Additionally the system will even automatically send you a weekly humidity report from the inside the safe.

“SafElert is another example of Liberty’s innovative thinking in an increasingly complex and dangerous world. We are always looking for ways to better protect what our customer’s value.”–Kim Waddoups, President, Liberty Safes.

The alarm and reports are sent as texts or emailsthrough a Wi-Fi system and received via email messaging and cell/smart phone via Elertus Cloud services.
