Natalie Foster: I am so happy to do another interview with you! This is a big deal- you guys are on Season Four of the show. How does it feel?

Stephanie Hayden: It’s great! When we first started this so long ago we thought we would do a couple of seasons and it would be fun and then, you know, you would go back to your regular job. But to see that people took to us so well and that they want us to stay around is just phenomenal. It is such a compliment and we are really humbled.

NF: This season has already been such a cool one. The fact that you guys had Chris Kyle come in wanting your dad’s signature and the Red Jacket logo on a gun for his charity is so cool.

SH: Thanks, you know, we always just try to make sure that anything we are doing is putting a positive light on the industry. Having someone like Chris Kyle say that a signature from one of us is actually going to increase the value of a firearm still blows us away. To have someone like Chris ask you for something like that is just unbelievable. It doesn’t even really register. And Chris is such a great guy. He is just so cool to work with.  He is honestly probably one of the funniest good ol’ boys I have ever met. For being the US’s most deadly sniper, that was kind of a surprise for me. He definitely has a really great personality.

NF: That segment between Flem (Glen Flemming) and Chris Kyle in which they discussed PTSD and the process of leaving the military was one of my favorites. Can you give me a little window – a behind the scenes picture of how that happened? Was that spontaneous or was that something they really wanted to talk about on the show?

SH: No, that was just part of their conversation. I have seen that many times before. When guys get together and they have both been through the same thing – it’s like two moms talking about kids, but instead it is two guys talking about war.  They understand each other and it is totally natural for them to get to that place. A lot of the guys who have been through that come out with that same feeling. The friends that you make there are family and it is really hard to let go. So many of them suffer from stress and they go through so much in their own personal lives, too. It was really cool to see the guys come together with that brotherhood and connect like that. It is kind of strange to see two Billy Badass get all emotional, but it is really cool that they talked about it on the show. I hope other veterans got something out of it.

NF: You guys have been so great about the military from the beginning of the show. Your dad was a Marine and, of course, Flem served. It’s really cool to see that you guys continue to honor those who serve for our freedom.

SH: Thanks. This country would not be what it is today without them. There are so many things that these men and women do for us that people take for granted.

NF: Ok, switching gears a little bit, let’s talk about more of your guests. Joe Perry of Aerosmith came on the show. I know you are a fan of his. How was that for you?

SH: That was insane! I have been such a huge fan of Aerosmith since I was a kid. I was born in the 80s and my mom loved all the hair bands, so I grew up listening to Aerosmith and I have never stopped. They continue to put out great music. So when they came down we got to work on a really cool old-school project with them we were so excited. It was a dream come true. And we really got to know them, which was awesome. It was unreal to get to spend time getting to know someone who you grew up thinking was one of the gods of Rock and Roll. They are really just down to earth, great people. For a guy that is such an icon, such a legend to be that down to earth and friendly – it really surprised me. They say that there are stars out there who are still good people, but Joe redefines “great people.” The whole family is really wonderful.

NF: You have met some pretty incredible people because of the show. You’ve had Ted Nugent come visit as well as other music legends. I bet Kris, with his blooming music career, is really excited about that.

SH: Yeah, Kris thought it was incredible. He has been invited to go play with Joe’s son – it is one of those things that he will get to as soon as he gets a moment away from Red Jacket. It has been really cool. Kris has had a chance to meet a lot of the people that he really looked up to in music and it has been awesome. It may not necessarily be the type of music he plays, but he is still in awe.

NF:  So beyond Joe Perry and Chris Kyle, this season has already been amazing. What else can we look forward to?

SH: Well, of course, if it hasn’t been released, I cant say anything, but I can tell you that we are building some of the most incredible weapons I have seen lately. You already saw our 57mm recoilless. They used to use it for avalanches. That one was so fun to work on. I mean, how often do you get a snow storm in the South?

NF: Sounds like you guys are having fun down there, as usual. So tell me about how life has changed for you since the show started airing. It was less than 2 years ago that life was kind of normal, right? And now, four seasons in, things are very different. You have a huge fan base, you got married – tell me about how the adjustment has been.

SH: Well, yes, I am married. Kris is a wonderful father. We do have two kids. A lot of people are asking about babies and the thing is, we are already raising two! So I don’t see that coming any time soon (laughs). We are just both really focused on what we are doing and trying to progress with life. We bought some land and we have been trying to get it ready to build a house. All of that has been a lot of work. And that is just personally. With the job, we have gone from one of those places that a handful of people knew about to this huge company. But things have stayed the same in a lot of ways. It is just a bigger family. That is the way we like to describe it because it still has that home-y feel but now we have more cousins and brothers and so on. The projects are definitely getting more interesting. We have branched out even more than before and it is just always getting better.

NF: How has the celebrity factor been for you? All of you guys have fans who adore you and I know you like to interact with them a lot. Is it fun or challenging or a little bit of both? How do you deal with it?

SH: I would say it is a little bit of both. The thing is, when you are on TV people expect you to be perfect. And we are just people. We are just doing our job. You can’t be perfect no matter how hard you try to be. Other than every now and again when someone chooses to point out a personal flaw, most of the people we meet are just so wonderful and they give you such positive feedback. It reminds you why you do what you do – why you deal with that camera in your face every day. And honestly, we don’t mind having the cameras around. The crew does a great job of staying out of the way – just doing their thing and letting us do our thing. But with the fans, it is always great to spend some time with them and talk to them and see what they think about what we are doing. The kids are my favorite. I got to go to Survival Expo in Las Vegas recently and we met so many kids who watch the show and it was the most heartwarming thing ever. One little girl named Haley walked up to me with tears in her eyes and told me I was her hero. I had to do everything in my power not to break down crying. I am just a regular girl from the South. It just blows you away that people connect with you so much. All Haley could say was that it was so great to see a strong independent girl on TV. I thought about it for a while and I get it, it’s just, who would have ever thought it would be me? And all I can do is to try to be that- to be a good person and to do good things for people and to deserve that admiration. And trust me, you never really feel like you deserve it.

NF: So what comes next? What are you looking forward to for the rest of the year? Any big trips or events going on?

SH: Well, we are actually currently shooting Season Five, so you have plenty more to look forward to. We are trying to go to SHOT show again, in Vegas, which is always fun. I am also trying to get back to Phoenix. I fell in love last time I was there. I have a great friend who lives there who I am dying to go back and see. And I can assure you there are plenty of surprises in store other than that.

OK, so she is holding it a little improperly, but at least she is keeping her finger off the trigger. That is definitely a step in the right direction. Love her or hate her, this is most certainly a sign that main stream pop culture is becoming more comfortable with shooting. That is a very good thing, my friends.  Be sure and read the article below. And feel free to giggle out loud at the term “rifle gun” as it pertains to skeet shooting (whaaat??). Sigh. At least they are trying.

When Claire Dunfy (Julie Bowen) went to the shooting range by herself in and almost-not-negative way on ABCs Modern Family last season, I was shocked and excited at what this might mean for us as shooters. Could it be that the gun meme is changing? Will our right to bear arms be attacked a bit less now that loveable (ok, and some not so loveable) Hollywood A-listers are capitalizing on shooting range photo ops? Only time will tell, but I do believe that we should be loud about cheering these characters and people on when they are supporting our 2A. Even if they don’t necessarily mean to. Give them some love. Other groups are fantastic about working to have their agenda publicized positively through pop culture. Why not us?

Ann, Rich Wyatt and Jesse trying out their new revolvers.

Many of us can relate to Ann (Leuders) Csincsak’s story. Our husbands or significant others love guns and find them necessary for self protection and even sport, but we are afraid of them. And for good reason, as least we think. When we listen to the media reporting negatively about guns 99% of the time, why on earth would we ever want to handle one, much less have one in our home?

Then comes the day when we realize, whether through a tragic event or perhaps something less dramatic, that we need to be able to protect ourselves. For the first time we consider what the guys have to say. Maybe it is time to consider a firearm after all. So what is the best possible course of action? We want to protect our families and property, but more than that we want to be safe. According to Ann, the first thing to do is to educate yourself.

Here is a snippet of the conversation I had with Jesse and Ann about guns and hanging out with Rich & Renee at Gunsmoke:

Natalie: Ann, tell me about this process of becoming a new gun owner. What has it been like for you?

Ann: I grew up in a home that respected guns but we never wanted them in our house. So it is kind of hard to change 20+ years of how you feel about something. And I had never actually touched a gun until I was 28 years old when we met Rich. If you think about it, when you watch the news every day you see guns hurting people, so it was really hard for me to bring guns in to our home. Especially with a child in the house. I wanted to make sure we protected him without hurting him at the same time. Going to Rich’s class really changed things for me. The advice I give to women now is to get gun education. I was completely afraid of guns. It would literally make my palms sweat talking about them. The first day of the class before we were even handling guns my palms were sweating because I had such a fear of guns in my home. But after leaving that class and gaining that education I am a completely different person now. Now I can take apart a gun and put it back together and feel totally comfortable.

Natalie: So what was it that changed your mind?

Ann: I think if you consider anything you are afraid of, if you were more educated about that subject, you would fear it less. Take

snakes, for example, you could be afraid of every snake that crawls around but if you know they aren’t going to hurt you, you won’t be so afraid.

You shouldn’t just pick up any old gun, you should get something that is applicable to your family. What many people don’t know is that there is a lot to guns now days. At one point Jesse couldn’t shoot his gun because he was not gripping the safety hard enough. That make me feel confident that my son won’t be able to just pick it up and shoot it.

Natalie: Jesse, how has Ann getting into shooting changed things for you?

Jesse: I like it now because I don’t have to pretend that I don’t want to go shoot guns or soft foot around the issue.  My wife now knows what it is about and why I am in to it.

When my wife was pregnant she was jogging one time and she was approached by a pack of coyotes. Luckily I had a shotgun in my car and was able to save her and my dogs from being attacked. Between that and her knowledge of guns now, it just makes everything with guns easier on a day to day basis.  I have a gun in my jeep, she has one in her car and I sleep better knowing that if I am not home or if I am traveling for work she knows how to protect herself. There is a firearm at home. She knows where it is. She knows how to use it. And that is a good feeling as a husband and a parent.

Natalie: So what was it like to work with Rich, Renee and the Wyatt crew?

Jesse: It was a lot of fun. They are super nice and down to earth. Being on TV to learn about guns is a lot different from being on TV to fall in love.  There was a lot of pressure on the Bachelorette – the most pressure we had on us at Gunsmoke was whether we were going to hit the target or not. (laughs)

Natalie: Tell me about the training course.

Jesse: It is a 3 day course and I can tell you – I have been a gun user since I was a little kid with my dad. After taking this class with Rich I realized that everyone needs a course like this. Before we even touched an unloaded gun he talks to you for hours about different scenarios and safety. Rich gave examples and reasons it is important only to use your gun as a last resort and to be aware that in any situation you come upon, you may not have all the facts. Owning a gun is about knowing that you have the ability to protect yourself and never having to pull the trigger – to be able to stay away from these situations. Then he goes in to teaching about where attacks happen, which is usually where guns aren’t allowed: schools, hospitals, planes, military bases. The bad guys go where people will not be able to defend themselves. If they know you will defend yourself they are a lot less likely to attack. Then they teach you how to properly draw your gun and that you are never allowed to have your muzzle pointed at anything you are not willing to destroy. They go over the dry firing scenarios and safety rules and prep you for the next two days with the live rounds, which is literally a blast.

Natalie: So did you guys have a competition?

Jesse: Yes, Rich does a few competitions and he tries to get your adrenaline going so you can kind of feel what it would be like to be in a situation where there pressure – for instance, if there was a bear or something coming at you.

Natalie: So between the two of you, who is the better shot?

Ann: Jesse is the better shot for sure, I am just the quicker draw.

Natalie: Well, that may be the more important element, actually.

Ann: Yes, I would agree.

Jesse: Ann was the quickest draw in our class – beating retired police officers, gunsmiths and everyone else in our class.

Natalie: It sounds like you got a lot out of it, Ann.

Ann: Yes, the thing I keep telling women is to get educated and try it. I am a real person with a family that was genuinely afraid of guns for a long time. And now I am a completely different person. And that is hard to say – that you had a complete change in your life at almost 30 years old, but the class definitely changed my entire belief about guns.

Natalie: So when you explain the fact that you own guns to your son, what will you say?

Ann: You know, that is a great question. It is actually one we asked Rich since he has 4 kids. At what age do you let kids shoot? The guidelines they teach is that the kids should be able to recite the basic gun rules and make sure that they genuinely understand them before they even touch a gun. I want my child to realize that guns are off limits but that they are to be used as tools by your parents until they say otherwise. You don’t want to scare them but you want them to understand that this gun could take someones life. Until they reach that age, they should not be allowed near them at all.

Natalie: So Ann, what do you say to people who say that guns are not feminine?

Ann: There is nothing more attractive than a women who knows how to handle again. It is empowerment and that is what you have to remember as a woman. This is all so empowering. Renee is really such a driving force behind women being more comfortable with guns and she helped me realize that you don’t have to change your style to carry a gun.

Natalie: So I hear you guys had some fun when you shot your new guns for the first time.

Ann: When we went out there to pick up the guns they had finished for us they had set up a carnival style shooting gallery for Jesse and me. They wanted to show us what these guns could do, so that was a fun way for us to get to test these guns for the first time and shoot together. It is definitely action packed at the end. Most of the time when people get a new gun they go out and shoot a paper target. Jesse and I got the experience of going out there and shooting explosives. The Wyatt’s go big when they do things!

Niki Jones, founder of the all-female shooting group, the Austin Sure Shots, is one of the coolest chicks I have met in my time as a shooter.  I asked her to whip up a little guest blog to tell us about her time at Gunsmoke for an episode of American Guns on the Discovery Channel (Weds 9/8pm).

I recently appeared on this season’s third episode of American Guns on the Discovery Channel. The whole experience, from beginning to end, was extremely fun and very exciting! 

When I found out I had the opportunity to fly to Colorado to see about trading in my (in)famous “Snow Queen” AR-15 for a bigger, badder AR-10, it was bittersweet. I wanted to bring back something for the girls of the Sure Shots (my women’s pistol league in Austin, TX) that we didn’t already have. We already had plenty of AR-15s, since about a dozen of us participated in our Sure Shots AR-15 Build Project where we built our own rifles, each one as unique as its owner. But we didn’t have any AR-10s among us, and a bunch of the girls had been saying they’d like to get into some long-range precision shooting.

Though I knew that sacrificing the Snow Queen for the good of the league was the right decision, I still had a pit in my stomach at the idea of being without her. I mean, I had built her myself, each and every part chosen by me to make my dream gun (Lightweight 16″ Moly barrel, free-floated and coated; POF railed hand guard, coated; Battle Comp compensator; Spikes Tatical lower, coated; Bravo Company Gunfighter charging handle; NIB Bolt Carrier Group; Ergo Stock; MagPul Grip; MagPul BAD Lever; MagPul Rail Sling Attachment; MagPul Gen III Sling; Troy BUIS; AImpoint Pro red dot optic). The Snow Queen was truly a labor of love, and it didn’t hurt that she shoots like a dream either.

So, I packed my bags and headed off to Denver to visit GunSmoke, Snow Queen in tow. I had seen American Guns before and loved the show, and I was curious to see what the Wyatts were like in real life. Well, they could not have been nicer. The first person I met was Renee, when I walked into GunSmoke and she was at the counter. She was super friendly and got really excited when she learned I had started a women’s pistol league that in only a year and a half had over 150 members. Rich was the same. I didn’t know he was such a huge supporter of women and guns, but it was clear almost immediately that my “cause” was close to his heart, and that this deal would happen.

The producers, who were as equally as nice and welcoming as the Wyatts, had told me to just be myself and walk in and negotiate like it was any other regular deal. Easier said than done—having giant lights and cameras pointing at you is nerve-wracking, to say the least. But when I described to Rich what I wanted in a precision rifle, he was very receptive. And when I threw in that I also wanted a grenade launcher, both Rich and Renee were DELIGHTED! I could tell I had ‘em…

I had to place a trade-in value on my gun, so I went with $3,000 due to all of the Snow Queen’s top-of-the-line parts, perfect custom paint job, and all-around uniqueness. When he said he’d give me $2K for the Snow Queen and that the AR-10 would be $10K, I didn’t balk TOO much—I expected that he would want the gun he builds the Sure Shots to be top-of-the-line as well, and I knew that AR-10 parts are not as varied and available as an AR-15. But, we couldn’t stop there. I’m originally from New York, and New Yorkers are born negotiating! So instead of accepting the $8K difference, I came back with $7K. When he said he just couldn’t do that, I bluffed that I was going to walk—but in all honesty, I wasn’t leaving there without sealing the deal! I’d come too far and already committed to my mission. Luckily, he didn’t let me walk out, and he agreed to $7K. It was ON.

They took a couple weeks building my gun, and then I flew back for the “reveal” of the Sure Shots’ AR-10. I had assumed it would happen in the store, so once I realized the American Guns producers had me heading toward the mountains, there was a great feeling of adventure and excitement! I pulled up to an old quarry in the middle of nowhere. The American Guns crew was waiting at the top of a cliff, and they wouldn’t let me near the edge to see what was down below. The suspense was killing me!

FINALLY, the moment had come. I was about to finally see the AR-10 I’d been dreaming about! Standing on top of that cliff, Rich, Renee, and Paige presented me with the most INSANE rifle I’d ever seen… and it was WHITE! It looked like the Snow Queen on steroids! And like the Snow Queen, it had some black accents, including a badass scope accurate to 700 yards, and even some little black cross-bones on the scope brackets! But the pièce de résistance was the grenade launcher I’d asked for! Big and black and badass, it sat underneath the rail and just took the rifle to the next level! I knew the Sure Shots would die when they saw it!

Once I was finished freaking out over the rifle, it was time for them to reveal what was over the cliff. They had set up a full tactical course for me, complete with exploding targets, each of which said “SURE SHOTS, Austin, Texas” and had a life-sized pinup girl beside it! But first, I had to take a long-range shot. So into the prone position I went, right there on the edge of the cliff. From experience with these rifles, I was expecting a much bigger impact when I pulled the trigger, but this gun was smooth… no recoil at all! I was in love. Then it was onto the tac course, and it was a blast! Rich took me through it—we literally ran down the side of the cliff, and I had to shoot targets whenever he spotted one and called it out. And the targets exploded! At this point I could tell by the way the cameramen were shooting us that they were going to be able to totally capture the action and the excitement, so that was one less thing for me to worry about!

Then, when I thought it couldn’t get any more fun, Renee called out on the two-way radio from where she stood on the cliff that there was a cluster of targets around the corner we were coming up on, and to “Use the grenade launcher!”… so that’s what I did. Switched over to the launcher, and let one fly. HUGE explosion! So much fun. I mean, how can it NOT be fun to blow things up in the middle of Nowhere, Colorado on a random Tuesday afternoon?

And, then it was over. And I flew back to Texas. I kept the news of my adventure under wraps until close to the time my episode aired because I really wanted to surprise the Sure Shots, and to say they were surprised is an understatement! And the Wyatts have kept in touch—Renee and I have been emailing, and Rich called in during our episode’s viewing party to say hello to all the girls! I’m hoping Renee and Paige will come out to Austin and shoot with us soon. All in all, it was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

than two years later she would be making waves on national TV as a featured guest on the Discovery Channel show American Guns.

I spoke with Niki as well as Renee and Rich Wyatt, the proprietors of Gunsmoke, the shop around which American Guns is based, and got a little insider info on the behind the scenes story as to how the whole thing went down.

So here is how it all started: As much as Niki loved her beautiful Snow Queen (that is the name of the white AR-15 that she built herself), it was time for a change. “All of the Sure Shots share guns and several of us have AR-15s. I wanted to bring a gun back to the girls that we could have some serious fun with,” she says.

As you may have seen on previous episodes of the show, Rich loves a deal. He truly enjoys the negotiation aspect of his job and he is very very good at it. Renee is charged with keeping the books at Gunsmoke and makes sure they get the most out of every deal. According to most of the customers who have been through Gunsmoke, Rich is a pretty tough negotiator. But when Niki Jones comes to town, all bets are off.

Rich recalls the process:

“Niki came in and she had her AR-15 platform gun, The Snow Queen, and wanted to do a deal with it to upgrade to a .308 AR-10 to get to 1000 yards and to beef it up a little. We looked it over and discussed the deal. ”

How was the negotiation process for you?

“Brutal! I didn’t stand a chance out of the gate. I have my  wife who normally wants me to get a good deal and now she wants me to *make* the deal. I really should have just gone home,” Rich says with a laugh.

So what role did Renee play in this sale?

“I was stepping on riches foot behind the counter!” she says. “It was an emotional transaction for me. Niki reminds me of me. She is a huge proponent for many women in the industry. We have this girl power thing going on. Niki was an atypical Gunsmoke customer in that she came from a long distance and she is a women and she knew what she wanted. She was very committed the entire time. Her focus was right on target. I could tell that this group, the Sure Shots, is one that I would like to do more business with. Niki is an amazing chick. She is beautiful, smart, articulate and a serious badass. I knew from the beginning

that we wanted to work with her in the future and I did not want to lose this deal.”

“So after we agreed on the deal we got the gun going and Kurt did the engraving and added a few more accessories,” Rich explained. “We built a gun for her that she could do anything with. To top it all off, we set up a huge course of fire for her. I have to say I was very impressed with Niki. A lot of guys could not have done what she did with that course. At the end there was huge finale and, though I don’t want to give away too much if you haven’t seen the episode, I can tell you the grenade launcher was involved. She was awesome.”

So what was Niki’s assessment of the Gunsmoke crew?

“They could not have been nicer. Renee and I have kept in touch. I really look forward to shooting with them again someday soon.”

Congrats to you, Niki, for making ladies in the industry look good! And kudos on those negotiating skills. We can’t wait to hear how you like the NEW version of the Snow Queen!

rated and most popular shows in the *world*, will feature the creation of the lovely Mrs. Lisa Looper. I caught up with Lisa today to hear the story of the way it all went down.

“A few months ago we got a call from the props department of the show. They said that the creator of the show had seen the Flashbang and wanted to use it in an episode. From what I understand, he saw it online and said, That holster is perfect for TV!”

In tonight’s episode, Kensi, one of the lead actresses on the show played by Daniela Ruah, is serving on a neighborhood watch and uses the holster to draw her Sig P238 during a confrontation.

I got a hold of one of the prop masters on the show and he told me that everyone on set loves the Flashbang.

“It is a great product and the people behind it were wonderful to deal with,” he raved. “It worked really well for us and it became the hero of the scene.” (“Hero” in movie speak refers to the object of focus. In English this means the holster got some good screen time.)

So how did Lisa feel when she got the call from CBS?

The Flashbang

“I was totally blown away. I don’t think I really believed it until they called back asking for more holsters so they could film the second episode,” she says.

The second episode Lisa refers to is coming up next week in the season finale. During that episode you can catch the Flashbang as two of the main characters walk in to a store where clerks are restocking the holsters. It seems TV land can’t seem to keep these things in stock. Isn’t it funny how art imitates reality?

Have you noticed how many women have been beating the crap out of people in movies recently? Lisbeth Salander, that tattooed girl herself, is of course the surly new archetype of ass-kicking woman. But last year there was also the teenage version of the affectless taker-of-names, in the highly enjoyable film Hanna. The assassin version was protagonist of the easily forgettable Columbiana, and the mercenary version in the equally forgettable Haywire, while The Tourist was the surprisingly entertaining Angelina Jolie version. Then there’s Kate Beckinsale in Underworld, the requisite vampire version (because these days you need a vampire version of absolutely everything), a darker heir to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And soon to arrive is the film adaptation of the wildly popular Hunger Games trilogy, promising to fulfill both the dystopian and the young-adult versions in one fell swoop.

This is also happening on television, most notably with Piper Perabo’s oddly compelling combination of ass-kicking and wisecracking and tight-skirt-wearing, on Covert Affairs, a more comedic, less preposterous (but alas less good) Alias.

What’s with all this female-perpetrated violence? Two and a half years ago, when I started writing a thriller called The Expats about a spy turned expat homemaker who relapses, I thought I was doing something marginally original. Sure, Angelina Jolie had been beating people up for years, but she was a statistical outlier in a field populated by her beau and his pals, while Rooney Mara was playing an ex-girlfriend. Now everywhere I turn there are stoic, buff women running around shooting guns, and elbowing people in their tracheas. (And by “people,” I mean men; these women are not, for the most part, beating each other up.)

Why? Is this Fourth Wave Feminism, wherein women are the new action heroes—the assassins, the spies, the hired guns, the defenders against the occult? (We even have an actual nonfiction First Lady who looks like she has a fearsome right hook, a far cry from the Rosalynn Carters and Nancy Reagans of my youth.) Is this a bona fide cultural shift, in the way we view gender roles? Or just a venal marketing shift, in the way moviemakers are angling to earn a buck? Or both?
