Like many tomboy wannabes, I grew up walking that fine line between the desire to be really tough and respected by the boys and feeding my innate girlie-ness. Part of that toughness I so desperately sought to display would include acquiring, on purpose, a scorching West Texas sunburn. I wore peeling skin like a badge of honor. Tragic and gross, I know. I cringe when I think back on how poorly I treated my skin as a tween/teenager, which are the ages at which so much permanent sun damage occurs.

Hey, our primary concern here is safety, right? That safety means taking good, holistic care of yourself, which includes cancer prevention. Whether you are defending yourself from a bad guy or getting regular mammograms, the same objectives apply. We need you around, sister! And too many of us are seeing the signs of sun damage, including melanoma, at a very young age. Check out these videos from Birchbox to refresh yourself on the good habits you should maintain every day and especially while you are on the range:

I made this video before the events at Sandy Hook took place and was set to post it the day of the attack. Out of respect for our nation in mourning, I thought it was best to refrain from posting it for a bit because I believe what we all needed as we cried together was simply silence. I know I am not alone when I say my heart is still broken over our collective loss. I hope, however, that this video and post can be a diversion, if for a moment, to engage in a fun, creative activity to celebrate this holiday season. With that, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and the Happiest of Holidays.

Love,

Meet Karla, just another amazing gun girl giving back to her community by helping women feel beautiful and confident inside and out. I just love this story. Karla sounds like one cook chick and I think she is a perfect example of women all over the country who love their guns as much as they love being girlie. Now if only we could find a salon/range combo…

Concealed carry instructor puts safety first

Karla Gilbertson is a certified concealed carry instructor. She says since the concealed carry law was enacted Nov. 1 she’s received many requests for her permit to carry classes.

By day Karla Gilbertson, owner of Attitudes Salon in Hammond, helps people gain confidence in their appearance. By night she helps individuals gain knowledge and confidence with their safety.

Gilbertson’s goal as a salon owner and a concealed carry instructor are similar.

“What I do here at the salon is make people aware of their beauty, I make them confident. I don’t want a woman walking down the street self-conscious and scared. Do you think that she’s going to be more of a target than the woman who’s walking down the street holding her head high because she knows she’s beautiful?” Gilbertson asked. “That’s how they tie together. It’s self-awareness and self-confidence.”

Gilbertson has been around guns her entire life, and she says the concealed carry law is long overdue.

Safety and confidence have always been important to the spunky stylist; she even started her own online educational resource called “God, Guns and Lip gloss” to empower women to take control of their personal safety, security and well-being.

In addition to the website she teaches a non-weapon National Rifle Association class called “Refuse to be a Victim,” which educates individuals about situational awareness.

Gilbertson branched out from her women’s safety resources into handgun safety and certification.

Gilbertson is American Association of Certified Firearms Instructors (AACFI) and National Rifle Association (NRA) certified. She said she’s also working to gain additional certifications.

Along with her dad, Larry, Gilbertson teaches introduction to handguns, Wisconsin permit to carry, Minnesota permit to carry and a Wisconsin and Minnesota combination permit to carry course.

Although she’s been shooting guns since age 12, Gilbertson says her dad is the handgun expert.

“My dad has been active in shooting sports for my entire life. He has been a hunter safety instructor for more 30 years and is a range safety officer. We have a lot of stuff to bring to the table,” she said. “I mainly handle the delivery and do the teaching portion. My dad does the shooting qualifications and gun talks.”

Gilbertson says the concealed carry classes aren’t for the faint of heart.

After one of our Facebook friends, Tiffany Kluempers, posted the result of her chick-ified (that’s a technical term) firearm, I was inspired. I contacted her and she insisted that the process was easy and that using non-acetone nail polish remover would not damage the finish on metal or polymer. I then asked you, my beloved readers, to chime in on which color of nail polish I should use. Pink won out over baby blue, orange and lavender, not only in number but also in plucks of the heartstrings. Several people suggested I use pink in support of breast cancer survivors. Incidentally, you can also do that by purchasing a Julie Golob S&W M&P 9mm.

Supplies:

Firearm

Nail Polish color of your choice. Brights are fun. Dark colors can be a cool, subtle change.

Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover (Note: MUST BE *NON*-Acetone in order to keep the original finish on the gun in tact)

Cotton Swabs

Cotton Balls

Paper or Cotton Towels

    });
});

Remove your mag and clear your firearm. Lock the slide back and keep it in this position for the entire process. Feel free to insert your cable lock (not pictured) as added security. Especially if you’ve got little ones running around.

Clean the area of the gun you wish to chick-ify by wiping it down with the paper or cotton towel.

Take your nail polish and begin filling in your specified grooves/lettering/symbol with nail polish. Painting outside the lines in this situation is perfectly acceptable.

After 30 minutes, check to see if you feel that you need another coat. If so, go to town on that gun. I used three coats on my LCP to ensure the nail polish would be bright enough to see.

Repeat steps 1-4 with your magazines.

Let the nail polish dry overnight – it seems like forever, I know, but trust me on this one.

Wake up and be excited about finishing your project. You’re almost there!

Now that the polish is completely dry, use your NON-ACETONE (!!!) nail polish remover on a cotton ball to wipe away the excess nail polish. Use the cotton swabs to clean the more detailed areas of the lettering.

Voila! You’re finished!! Now take pictures and post them on our Facebook wall. Can’t wait to see!

Thanks again, Tiffany, for this super fun idea.

Well it’s about time!! Our dear friends over at Red Jacket Firearms are launching a merch line. We’ve definitely got to get in on this- love that range bag. Check it out!

Dallas – Not just for NRA anymore, as fans of hit TV show grab gun-inspired gear on RJFGear.com

Have machine guns gone “mainstream”? As stars of one of America’s hottest TV shows, Will Hayden and his team at Red Jacket Firearms, a small gun shop that packs a punch in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, know first-hand how popular the firearm culture is becoming among mainstream audiences. To that end, the group is bringing fashion and firearms together with a line of men’s wear, women’s wear and accessories on the company’s new website, www.RJFGear.com.

“Sure, it’s the guys who grew up loving guns, and military guys and more,” said Hayden, founder and owner of Red Jacket Firearms. “But it’s also grandmas and tech geeks, young and old, people from every background and all parts of the country. This show has shown us that a love of guns is something that is touching a lot of people. It’s something we’ve known for a long time — but even Red Jacket is surprised by the very warm reception that the American people are giving us.”

A firearms phenomenon, perhaps? The numbers certainly tell the tale, as the hit TV show centered on Hayden and his crew at Red Jacket Firearms, the Discovery Channel’s “Sons of Guns,” recently debuted its second season as the number-one, non-sports primetime cable program for men ages 18 to 34. The show is a phenomenon across all demographic segments, pulling in women and families, too. While “Sons of Guns” focuses mainly on the high-end, unique firearms Red Jacket Firearms builds, it’s also an inside look at the family of employees at the small Louisiana gun shop, and a peek inside the gun culture that drives their lives and business. America can’t get enough, as the show has locked and loaded a second hit season.

Pairing fashion with firearms is next up in Red Jacket Firearm’s arsenal, as the group launches RJFGear.com to offer fans gun-inspired gear. From men’s wear to women’s wear, accessories and more, “Sons of Guns” show fans, general gun-lovers, and those inspired by the firearms phenomenon will be able to find trendy designs that speak to their love of guns.

Ammo Jewelry

Posted on September 2, 2011 by Shelley Rae

I don’t wear much jewelry and I’m not a huge fan of putting ammunition in my jewelry. I just don’t see much appeal in walking around with a 9mm casing wrapped around my neck. This morning, while hunting for a link for my Gunny Kitchen post, I stumbled across some ammunition jewelry that I actually like.

Jeni’s Pistol Petals

The necklaces I came across are not just some casings with gold chains through them, there is some artistic value in Jeni’s “Pistol Petals”. She has taken different caliber casings and bent them out to form flowers and mounted them on sterling silver wire. While I, personally, would not purchase anything larger than a 9mm casing her creations go all the way up to .500 S&W and include a set of a .25 ACP earrings. It’s a relief to see ammo jewelry that is not just ammo on a chain, but rather ammunition that has been taken and stylized into something more than ammo.

Step 1- Take thin, horizontal sections and back-comb the full base of your head. Create a cushion at the base, by pressing the hair down, from length to scalp. Each additional section may, but is not required to, incorporate the former section. Goal: Make your hair full and cushiony at the scalp.

Step 2- Using a bristle brush, smooth over the top of your hair, in the direction you wish the hair to move.

Step 3- Gather the hair to the preferred side & fasten with a hair tie. Tighten the pony, by pulling on the length, causing the hair tie to tighten toward the scalp. You may also want to fluff or rough up the crown area, to make fuller and/or more “messy.”

Step 4- If you have layers or bangs, softly slide them over to the side, tuck behind the ear, or fasten with a decorative pin or barrette.

Voila! There you have it, my sidearm sisters. Now go hit that range and be the firearm fashionista you were always meant to be! Much more to come….
