True to NSSF form, this app is awesome. I have yet to see anything like it for the world of firearms. It is incredibly exciting to see the gun community embrace this technology. We are making progress, people!

Where2Shoot has everything you need to digitally prepare for the range. You can find high quality video full of shooting tips from experts in the Tips section and vital basic safety rules under the Safety tab. The primary selling point of this app is, of course, its GPS-guided list of contact info for ranges near you. If you spend a lot of time traveling or happen to have moved recently, this feature can help you find a new place to hone those perishable shooting skills. The only area in which I can see room for improvement when they update the app is this: I would like the location of the ranges to be connected to the Maps app so you can access directions immediately without having to copy and paste address information. Other than that, I am very impressed with their work.

Best part of Where2Shoot – it is FREE! If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, I highly recommend making this little advancement part of your app collection.

Where2Shoot is the comprehensive app that the firearms community has so desperately needed. Kudos to NSSF for making this happen!

UPDATE: I just heard from the NSSF and they are working on an Adroid app that will be out this summer.

Dear Girls Guide -

Please don’t think this is anything but a serious inquiry, and I know from past experience that on THIS site, at least, I may get a reasonable response without some pig-head, macho that other sites exude in plenty.

Not new to shoot, but new to carrying (legally I need to add) and have a simple belt holster for my Sig. My new problem is two-fold. Bottom of the holster is open and the top area near the hammer is exposed. I keep the gun clean and well oiled. By the end of the day my shirts show signs of oil from the hammer (shirt worn over the gun and holster) and my pant leg shows some oil and powder residue.

In my opinion (I’m very glad of this) that women seem to take pride in their wardrobe, dress nicer, and do things like pre-treat stains, etc. to keep their closes lasting longer and in better shape. Any great recommendations for treating or getting the oil/powder stains out, i.e. pre-treats or home remedies you could recommend? Tan slacks are looking a bit ‘shady’ where the barrel rubs the pant leg. Thanks and keep up the great work on the site!

Have you tried Frog Lube? It is a gel substance created by former SEALs and I love using it on my gun. It is effective, non-toxic, does not drip and even smells minty fresh. I have heard dry lube is useful, too, but have yet to actually use it.

My high school English teacher is going to cringe at the grammatical nastiness of title of this post, but hey- we have to keep headlines short and descriptive. Sorry, Mrs. Kingston. I promise I did learn many things from you. I can not, however, promise that I will apply them. What I *can* promise is that Magnum Boots is a phenomenal company with which I have had the great pleasure of doing business (note the good grammar). This Christmas Eve they will be giving $1 per Facebook “like” to Operation Gratitude, a wonderful organization that is doing fantastic work for our troops. Be sure and spread the word to all of your FB peeps and check out the press release below.

And from Girls Guide to Guns to you and your family, may you have a wonderful holiday with lots of love and laughter and maybe a little firepower, too.

MAGNUM TO DONATE $1 TO OPERATION GRATITUDE FOR
EVERY FACEBOOK “LIKE” ON CHRISTMAS EVE

MODESTO, CALIF. – For the past 11 days, Magnum Boots USA has been giving its Facebook fans gear from not only Magnum, but its partners like ITS Tactical Edge Custom Calls, Bass Brigade, Panther Racing and Women’s Tactical Association. For the 12th Day of our 12 Days of Christmas celebration, the Magnum team has decided to change it up a bit, and give back to an organization that is doing incredible things for our troops serving overseas instead — but we need your help.

On Christmas Eve until Midnight, Magnum Boots USA will donate $1 in your honor to Operation Gratitude for every “like” to our Facebook page and/ or for the 12th Day of Christmas image featuring Operation Gratitude (up to $1,000). Then, tell all of your colleagues, friends and family who use Facebook to “like” our page and the image, too. Every “like” counts!

Operation Gratitude, which has shipped more than 750,000 packages to American troops deployed overseas since 1993, aims to lift morale of U.S. Armed Forces, bring a smile to a service member’s face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American people.

With this goal, all previous rules and entry regulations from the 12 Days of Christmas giveaway are thrown out the door. Whether you live in the U.S. or not, anyone and everyone can offer up a “like” to help raise funds for this worthy charitable organization.

“We realize that not everyone is blessed with being able to be home and spend time with their families during the holidays,” said Brett Weitl, Magnum USA’s marketing director. “We hope that our humble donation will help touch some of those folks, and bring them a little piece of home and serve as a reminder that we truly appreciate their support.”

ABOUT OPERATION GRATITUDE
Operation Gratitude annually sends 100,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation addressed to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed in harm’s way and to Wounded Warriors in Military hospitals and Transition Units. The organization’s mission is to lift morale, bring a smile to a service member’s face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American people. Each package contains donated product valued at ~$125 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. For safety and security, assembling of packages occurs at the Army National Guard armory in Van Nuys, California. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 750,000 packages to American Military deployed overseas.
Rolla, MO–(Ammoland.com) – While I love my GLOCK 19 Gen 4, and think it is the perfect pistol to fit my needs, I tend to like to be a little different at times. GLOCK produces their pistols in one color: black.

My husband has a Springfield XDM with the stainless steel slide and I have to admit that I prefer the contrast that it has compared to just one solid color. That being said, I wanted to give my GLOCK a little personality and change the color of the slide. I didn’t, however, want to pay a gunsmith to bake on a finish. I consider myself to be a bit artistic, so I decided to do it myself. I did a little research to find a product to use and in the end I decided to give the Shake ‘N Spray DuraCoat Finishing Kit a try.

Shake ‘N Spray DuraCoat Finishing Kit

Lauer Weaponry, the manufacturer of DuraCoat Firearm Finishes, claims that the Shake ‘N Spray kit provides everything you need to finish your Firearm in a simple and user friendly way. The kit contains TruStrip and a scrubbing pad to degrease with, a jar to mix the DuraCoat ingredients, and a Preval Aerosol Sprayer to apply. Besides the instructions on the packaging, there also is a video available on the company’s website to view the application of the product.

After watching the video, I felt pretty confident that this was something I could do myself. The hardest part in my opinion: choosing which color to use. With more than a hundred different finishes available, deciding on which to use can take a little time. I knew I wanted something that would contrast with the black grip, but not stick out too much. The colors are available to view on the website, but it is difficult to get a real feel for them on there. I kept leaning toward my favorite color, which is purple, and after viewing the choices available I felt pretty confident that DuraCoat standard color 95-Goddess Purple was exactly the right choice for me. It was the darkest purple available, so I felt it would look best with the standard black of the GLOCK.

It’s no secret that in the past we ladies have had a bit of a challenge in concealed carry department. We could either wear big, baggy, unflattering clothing that eliminates every ounce of our femininity and carry our sidearms on our belt like the blokes do, or we could simply go without our gun and pray we don’t need protection. Personally, neither of those options sounds particularly appealing to this fashion-conscious firearm owner. There is, of course, the option of securing the gun in your purse. Despite advice from law enforcement friends who adamantly oppose it, I’ve tried that method and have found a couple of reasons why it’s a bad idea:

1) I’m not always physically connected to my purse. I mean, what am I supposed to do when I sit down for dinner, hold my bag in my lap? And then when I need to use the restroom step or outside to take a call, I’d be an irresponsible permit holder if I didn’t take my purse with me, right? Not only does that look weird, but behaviors like this could potentially call attention to the fact that I am carrying a firearm in my purse. That, of course, is never a good idea. And, for the moms out there – what if your kiddo finds his way in to your purse, as they tend to do, and discovers that shiny thing that he’s seen the cowboys use on TV?

2) What if my purse is stolen? A situation like that is more of a royal mess than Princess Eugenie’s wedding day hat. Can I get an amen? Chances are, if someone steals your purse with your gun in it, they are probably not going to use their new found firepower for the forces of good. This is a can of worms you simply do not want to open. In many states if your gun is found at a crime scene or used for some nefarious purpose, regardless of who committed the act, you will be held accountable on some level. An incident like this can literally change your life forever. And if you think ammo is expensive, just wait til you get your lawyer bills.

We girlie girls are forced to get creative when it comes to concealed carry. And while the Princess might be able to hide a gun somewhere in that crazy creation, most of us have to deal with the reality of fashion for commoners. Fortunately, the fine folks over at Looper Law Brand have heard our collective cry and come up with a solution to this firearm fashion emergency.

It’s called the Flashbang. When this product came on the market I was skeptical, but intrigued. And not just because of the name. Think about it… Flash… Bang…. It’s hysterical. That alone merits a product review, in my book.

This little bundle of awesomeness comes in the form of a hard plastic shell that is custom fit to your concealed gun. They’ve got several models currently available and more coming soon. I own a Ruger LCP and Looper Law was able to ship it out the day I placed the order.

Here’s how it works:

The Flashbang consists of a leather strap bolted in to a hard plastic clam shell case.

The first concern for me was whether this holster would be comfortable. If something isn’t comfortable, I’m not wearing it. Except for a stunning pair of 4 inch Jimmy Choo stilettos, of course. In that case I just suck it up and endure like well-disciplined fashionista would. But I digress. Given the right bra, the Flashbang is exceedingly comfortable.

When doing the range test I was impressed by the incredibly quick access I had to the gun. Much to my relief, and to the chagrin of many of your guy friends, you don’t actually flash anyone when you pull the gun out of the holster. The Flashbang website has a great video illustrating the surprisingly modest movement of the draw:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Here’s Lisa Looper, the creator, showing us how the whole process works:

Click here to view the embedded video.

I’ve found that when wearing my holster, the bra I pair it with needs to be sturdy. You probably already have plenty of these in your chest of drawers already. (Pun totally intended.) In my experience, the wider that little “in between” band is, the more secure and comfortable the holster is to wear.

Specifically, one bra in particular that I purchased at the GAP features a thin piece of fabric where the holster would be attached. Sadly, GAP and the Flashbang did not get along. The little middle piece of fabric that connects the girls was too thin and did not hold the holster in place in a comfortable manner. Other bras that I’ve purchased from Vicki (you can call Victoria’s Secret that when you know her as well as I do) work quite nicely. As long as the middle band measures approximately 3/4 of inch or more in height, you’re good to go. I should also note that each of the three leather straps that come with the Flashbang has adjustable holes by which you can shorten or lengthen the leather to fit your bra. Simply remove the screw with a Phillips Head (X shaped) screwdriver and replace the standard (smallest) leather strap with one of the others.

One of our Facebook friends mentioned that she was concerned that the Flashbang would be bad for her back. I thought that was a good point, so I paid particular attention to my posture the first day or two that I wore the holster. I found that the Flashbang actually improved my posture for two reasons. First, I was no longer carrying a 3-5 lb pistol + ammo in my purse on my shoulder along with the countless items that find their way in to the black hole that is my handbag. Secondly, if I slouched when seated, the butt of the gun would press in to my abdomen and rib cage which proved a bit bothersome. Once I sat with my shoulders back, the problem was solved. What do you know? Perfect posture by way of a firearm. My grandmother would be so proud.

Another concern I had was whether the Flashbang would work with tight shirts. Before using the holster I thought the expectation that I could hide a gun between the bazooms was completely unrealistic. There would have to be some give away, right? So I tested it. Boldly. After receiving a total of zero awkward comments from friends about that thing hiding in my rack, I concluded that I was in the clear. Boyfriend later confirmed that fact when I asked him specifically if he had noticed anything odd in the aforementioned location.

Now that I had the visibility question answered, it was time for the trickiest of the concealed tests. I wanted to know if the gun would reveal it’s placement when I hugged someone. After eating lunch one day with my friend, Scott, I decided it was time to find out. As we said goodbye I intentionally gave him a big old full-frontal hug. “Did you feel it?” I asked. “Feel what?” he responded. Question answered. Thanks, Scott. Bless his heart, he’s probably still scratching his head about that one.

Some of our readers have inquired as to how these things work for my sidearm sisters who are a bit smaller chested than myself. I wanted to be sure that my A and B cup friends don’t feel left out so I asked a B cup friend of mine to try it on and see what she thought. She had on a pretty fitted top and we were both impressed by the fact that the Flashbang was just as discreet on her as it is on me. Incidentally, who ever thought a firearms product test would include staring at eachother’s boobs? I can’t help but think that somewhere out there Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are finding this hilarious.

One question about the bra holster that I’ve heard from the by-the-book gun safety crowd – one that I find to be valid – is, “How do you keep from muzzling (pointing the barrel of the gun at) yourself or others?” I asked Lisa Looper, creator of the FlashBang, that very question. This is her response:

“I think the most useful point in the muzzling debate is that the trigger guard is completely covered and in addition the slide is immobilized. People don’t worry about a gun that may/may not be loaded that’s just sitting on a table somewhere. Guns aren’t known for randomly firing off a round. Its when the human element comes into play that the accidental discharge is a concern. Since there isn’t a way for the gun to be accessed until it’s intentionally drawn the risk of an AD [accidental discharge] is extremely miniscule. Just so I would be able to answer that question in the past, I’ve tried to fire my gun (dry-fire) while it was in the holster and as quickly as possible once it was drawn. To fire it in the holster would have been incredibly intentional. Like to the point of making my finger bleed! The draw part is a bit harder to explain but the elastic of the bra makes it give as you try to draw your weapon. By the time the elastic reaches full extension the gun is pointing down and forward and only at that point does the holster jerk back toward the body and allow access to the gun. The most likely instance of an accidental discharge with the Flashbang Holster is while reholstering. I DO NOT recommend reholstering on-body because of the direction the muzzle points. It’s also a really good way to pinch the girls! Ouch!”

Should you choose to purchase the Flashbang, I absolutely recommend consistent practice with it. Practice at home by dry firing it in a safe space and definitely take it to the range to build muscle memory in case you do have to use it for self defense. Be sure and clear your practice with the Range Safety Officer (RSO) first. In all likelihood, they haven’t seen the Flashbang yet, and using it without clearance could result in some tense moments in the bay.

Good firearm safety habits are a must at all times, but they are particularly important when drawing from this holster. Specifically, the rule, “Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire,” is critical. When range testing the Flashbang, I had no problems with pulling the gun out (though you have to pull hard), and felt safe the entire time because of the safety habits drilled in to my head by the good folks at Legion Firearms and Spartan Training Resources.

Overall, the Flashbang has met or exceeded my expectations on all counts. If you’re as interested in dressing like a chick as you are in self defense, I highly recommend the Flashbang for your next firearm accessory purchase. When it comes down to it, we’ll probably need more than one option to cover all of our concealed carry bases, but the Flashbang is definitely the perfect go-to holster for the firearms fashionista.

The issues covered in this post were those that I found most pertinent. If there is a question or concern you have about this product that was not answered in this post, please leave your feedback in the comments section below and I will be happy to address it.

Addendum by request:

The sweat issue: I’ll be the first to admit- that plastic against your skin in hot weather does tend to cause a little glistening. It wasn’t much of a problem here in the dry heat but if you live in a more humid area, I could see how it might become bothersome. My suggestion is this: cut a little piece of Dr. Scholl’s Moleskin and stick it on the body side of the holster. It will absorb the sweat and add a tiny little space for air to breeze in. The moleskin is removable so you can keep it fresh and sweat free every time you wear it. Please note, this is just a theory. I have not put this in to practice yet. If you have a chance to do it first, I’d love your feedback.

These are a few of my favorite things….

It’s back to school time again, and I am taking a page from the famous Staples commercial that is set to the tune “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”. Even though these lists of favorite things usually come out before the holiday season to offer gift ideas for those hard to buy for people, or really cool stuff you want for yourself, as I get set for another year of carpools and school events, my year gets going in September and I can’t start my year without my favorite things.

After I built my first AR 15, I wanted to spend as much time as I could at the range. However being a busy full time mom I have limited time to engage in personal activities so I wear my beautiful custom bullet charm necklace by Julia Teeples of the Smoking Bullet to help me dream about my next range visit. My charm was created using the bottom of a .223 casing fired from my new rifle, it’s small and great for every day wear. In addition to custom work, Julia has some wonderful pieces on her website created from a variety of bullet casings. I love my necklace and when I am stuck in traffic or at homedoing laundry it is a special reminder of another one of my favorite things (which didn’t make this particular list). TheSmokingBullet.com has pieces starting at $25.

If I had to pick one item to top my favorite things list it would definitely be my next item – the Spyderco Delica 4 knife — mine is purple. It’s become like my Blackberry, I cannot leave the house without it. It is very sturdy and lightweight, I can barely feel that I have it clipped in my front pocket. The blade is 2 7/8 inches long and easily opens one handed using the 13mm hole and then locks back for use. I use mine for anything from opening the boxes UPS has left on my porch from my various internet shopping adventures to pulling out cartridges stuck in the ejection port of my gun. My husband initially balked at me carrying the knife, but now he is constantly asking me if I have it on me. As I have small children at home, I leave it on the top of my dresser at night but I find myself patting down my pockets before I leave the house each day to make sure I have it with me. Available at knifecenter.com for $57.95.

Honestly, I wasn’t really sure about my next favorite thing when I first bought it but the lipstick case pepper spray turned out to be a great little tool to have in my pocket or purse. I was carrying a typical black key chain size OC pepper spray. It certainly was capable of getting the job done but it was clunky and unsightly for someone like me who takes care with my accessories. Enter the lipstick pepper spray. It’s small and inconspicuous, even for someone who rarely wears lipstick, because the bad guys don’t know that. The spray has a range of ten feet and some brands will leave a marker on the suspect as well for identification. If you feel like you are being followed, just pull it out for a quick “touch up” and catch your attacker by surprise. My case has some bling on it in the form of a glitter heart which definitely makes it anything but typical or mundane. It can be purchased at amazon.com with the glitter heart for
$4.94. Other styles are also available.

I don’t know why it took me so long to purchase my Hogue HandAll Pistol Grip for my Glock but I am very glad I did. After taking a tactical pistol class, I found my hand was torn up from the constant holstering of my gun, so I decided to try a Hogue grip. It’s soft and cushioned which allows a closer, sturdier grip on the gun for me, especially helpful because I have small hands. It also makes shooting
one handed more comfortable. It went on with some effort — please be sure to double check that the gun is unloaded before attempting to install the grip — but it hasn’t come off since. I am all about comfort so this grip fits right in with my lifestyle. It comes in pink too if you also feel like making a statement at the range. Find it on amazon.com for $10.95 in three colors.

Ask anyone and you will find I am a huge Under Armour (UA) fan. In fact, I am not too embarrassed to say I could probably fund the budget of a small country with what I have spent on my UA wardrobe. They have some great products in their women’s line and my absolute favorite item is the RBI Women’s UA hat in black which I bought for shooting. I like it because it made from a light weight material and has a scaled down brim. This makes it perfect for blocking the shower of cartridges coming from the port to my left at the range but it doesn’t block my view of my own targets with a heavy shadow from the brim. I found myself reaching for it even when I wasn’t going shooting so I bought a few more to rotate. And it looks cute too, my younger sister is always trying to steal it from me whenever we go out together. Available at sportsunlimitedinc.com or cabelas.com starting at $13.88.

I have to end this list with a very inexpensive item that I actually made myself — my paracord bracelet. Paracord was originally used in suspension lines of military parachutes in World War II but paratroopers found it useful for many other tasks in the field. It is often woven into a bracelet worn with special significance to military service members and is available in a host of colors. It has become somewhat of a fashion statement outside the military as well. The usefulness of carrying around up to ten feet of paracord is not diminished however by the proliferation of people wearing them. For anyone who likes to carry as much gear as they can to always be prepared, a paracord bracelet should be standard attire. I can’t even list the many uses of paracord here but a simple internet search will tell you how strong and useful this cute little bracelet can be. It could truly save a life when combined with the knowledge of an educated, savvy and fashionable person wearing it. Buy one at survivalstraps.com or fashion one yourself using instructions from instructables.com.

Summer is coming to an end.
Lightfield provides these safety precautions to consider and learn before using Less Lethal ammo in your firearm:

All users must be trained and competent in basic firearms safety.

All users must be fully familiar with any current Federal and State case law, as well as any local or organizational guidelines or restrictions regarding both the Use of Force and use of Less Lethal ammunition.

All users must be able to differentiate between Less Lethal and conventional ammunition as well as articulate the properties and safe engagement distances of any Less Lethal munition they might required to deploy.

All users must articulate why center mass is not the desired point of impact and why large muscle groups and soft tissue should be targeted.

All users must be made familiar with the point of aim / point of impact of any Less Lethal munition they might deploy at varied distances by live fire range exercises as often as the agency might require.

All users need to have an post-shooting plan covering possible medical treatment, restraint and removal of targeted persons.

Lightfield LLR strongly recommends the use of designated shotguns (by color) for Less Lethal deployment. The principles of Contact and Cover should be integral to Less Lethal engagements. The use of available stand-off distance, obstacles, cover and concealment are strongly recommended.

Obviously, it’s vital to observe your typical safety precautions with any gun. Some of the points outlined above lean toward a little tactical training, which we are fans of here at Girl’s Guide to Guns. Check out the Women’s Tactical Association or Women’s Shooting Academy for information on classes.

Lightfield Less Lethal rounds come in 20 gauge, 12, gauge, and .410. They will fit in home protection firearms such as the new Smith&Wesson Governor to be released 2011. Below is a video we found displaying just what the Governor is all about.

If you’ve browsed around this site a bit, you’ve noticed that safety is our primary priority. While we love to have fun, we know that you can’t start having fun until you’re aware of and obey some VERY important rules. We’re always on the look out for the newest and latest technology when it comes to firearm safety and we’ve discovered this little jewel that might make sense for you and your gun.

It’s called the Safety Bullet. This patented device effectively “jams” a bullet cartridge in the chamber of a handgun, rendering it useless without harming the gun.

Here’s the demo video posted from the Safety Bullet site:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The manufacturer describes the product as the “safest, easiest and fastest firearm safety control device ever made” which will “immediately start saving lives by ending most types of accidental shooting.”

I could get behind that. And while we at Girl’s Guide have yet to try the Safety Bullet, we’re pretty impressed by the demonstrations we’ve seen and read about.

According to his website, the Safety Bullet creator set out to manufacture a device with the following attributes:

Would not allow an unauthorized user from using your firearm

Would be simple in design and thereby reliable

Would be easy to use

Would not harm the firearm

Would not require a key to unlock

Would be inexpensive

Would be fast to load and unload

Would lock the firearm up instantly once fired

The Safety Bullet is available in standard handgun calibers including 9mm, .357, .38, .40 and .45 ACP, all of which can be purchased here.

The website notes that the Safety Bullet was created in response to the “senseless death of a child ten years ago.” We applaud the manufacturer for channeling grief into productivity that benefits all of us.

Please note, this product is not a substitute for basic gun safety rules. Think of it as an insurance policy against an accidental discharge of your weapon.

Check out another demonstration video:

It’s October already and that means it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Several firearms and firearms accessory manufacturers have special items to help raise money for the cause.

But before that, we want to remind all our readers that, unfortunately, breast cancer can effect anyone. There’s a great deal of information over at National Breast Cancer Foundation, and if you have any questions, we recommend you click on over there. You can find out general information, statistics, information on prevention and detection, and much, much more.

We also scoured the internet and found quite a few gun-related items that you might be interested in. Not only are they firearms-related (which is our favorite thing, of course), but some of the proceeds go to fighting that infamous villain, (everybody “boo”) cancer.

Smith & Wesson Julie Goloski M&P 9mm

First off, we want to start with the Smith & Wesson Model M&P9 JG.

Smith & Wesson 9mm

In addition to the fact that a portion of all proceeds from the sale of this gun go to a Breast Cancer Awareness Charity, it’s doubly-cool because it was designed in collaboration with one of GG2G’s favorite professional shooters, Julie Goloski-Golob. Here’s some more info on this gun:
