While most of us here in the US were asleep on Saturday night, this California girl and her shotgun were out braving the London wind and rain in an effort to make history.

Kim Rhode, who, for the record is one of the coolest chicks you could ever meet, left the rest of her women’s skeet competitors in the dust and scored an Olympic Record hitting 99 of 100 targets, tying the World Record and scoring her historic fifth Olympic medal in five Olympics. She is the first American athlete to ever do so.

Check out this interview we did with Kim during her training last year:

Here is a report on her incredible win:

Rhode’s drive for 5 capped by skeet gold medal

She set an Olympic record with 99 points

LONDON (AP) — Step aside, Carl Lewis.

You, too, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Al Oerter.

Meet Kimberly Rhode, the first American with individual medals in five straight Olympics, after a golden, record-setting, nearly perfect performance.

Rhode won the women’s skeet shooting Sunday, tying a world record and setting the Olympic mark with 99 points — meaning she missed once in 100 shots. She was eight targets better than silver medalist Wei Ning of China and nine better than Slovakia’s Danka Bartekova, who topped Russia’s Marina Belikova in a shootout for the bronze.

Rhode won in double trap at Atlanta as a teenager in 1996, took bronze in that event four years later at Sydney, re-claimed the gold at Athens in 2004 and won the silver in skeet at Beijing in 2008.

Now, golden again.

“It’s just been an incredible journey,” said Rhode, strands of glitter intertwined with her blonde hair. “And ultimately, I couldn’t be happier for bringing home the gold for the United States.”

Lewis, Oerter, Joyner-Kersee and Bruce Baumgartner are the other Americans recognized as individual medal-winners in four straight Summer Olympics. Rhode’s at five now, and at 33 years old, she’s not planning to stop anytime soon.

Read the rest of this article here: https://www.krqe.com/dpps/sports/summer_games/rhodes-drive-for-5-capped-by-skeet-gold-medal-sp12-jgr_4253676

We could not be more proud of you, Kim! I look forward to seeing that medal in person back in California. Thanks for inspiring us all yet again. You are a true champion in every sense of the word.

NEW ORLEANS–

Weekdays, you’ll find Cheri Barnes at her lakefront office in Gentilly. That is, if she’s not working with the Jaycees or the Junior League. And every now and then, this young professional sneaks in a manicure or pedicure.”I love a spa day,” says Barnes from her desk.

But on many weekends, Barnes goes through a transformation. Gone is the business suit — replaced by cammo hunting gear and a .270 Remington. For Barnes, it isn’t just about the chase. ” The best part of hunting is sometimes just getting to see the wildlife, the quiet time.”

Barnes may not fit the stereotype so often depicted on the web and in other media sources of women and guns. Too often, the pairing of the words results in a series of bikini-clad women with assault rifles and ammunition belts strapped across their bodies. But just as many reports show an increase in the number of women owning guns, there’s a push to change the stereotype. One example is a new book by Lindsay McCrum called “Chicks with Guns.”

SHOT Show is the firearms industry’s version of Fashion Week. But rather than going to NY, Milan, Paris and LA for the various designers, the gun companies simplify and everyone heads to Vegas in January. One shot, one kill, as they say.

As we recover from all the fun of this year’s events we thought we’d share some highlights and insights with you. We have lots of video to upload over the following weeks, including interviews about female-centric product lines with Browning, Beretta, SHE and several others. There were more products and information in that convention center than we could possibly ever see over a short 4-day conference, but we brought plenty back to share with you.

The firearms manufacturers are beginning to understand that female shooters are a force to be reckoned with. We saw new lines of products for women from manufacturers including Walther, Taurus, and Tru-Spec among others. We’ve gotta hand it to these manufacturers – they are making a serious effort to cater to the ladies, which is a very good sign that the new female shooter movement has momentum. We found clothing cut specifically for women that will be offered in non-pink colors (though pink did reign supreme at the show), and many of the firearms have smaller grips and/or softer recoil for our hands and shoulders. There were plenty of solid concealed carry options for women presented at the show, too. We at GG2G are loving this new trend. Keep it up, gentlemen!

We were privileged to be the subject of an interview for the NRA News and a post on the NRA Blog. We also caught up with Karen and Jessica of the Women’s Tactical Association. We’re huge fans of this organization. They are doing some super cool training to keep police and armed citizens safe and we are thrilled to be involved with them. We’ll have an article on them up soon. We also had a chance to spend some time with our good friends at GunUp.com. These folks are set to corner the market of online firearms information, social networking, and marketing. Head on over there to sign up and see what we mean. While checking out some high tech gear at the LaRue Tactical booth (recommended by our good friend Brad Thor), we got a chance to chat up the Governor of our favorite State, Mr. Rick Perry of Texas.

And what SHOT Show would be complete without spending some time with our old friends like the lovely Julie Goloski-Golob and the fabulous Kim Rhode? We met countless other fantastic folks who we are very excited to work with in the near future including OutdoorBlog.net, The Mako Group, Freedom Arms and Fabrique National Herstal among many more. And a special shout out goes to two male members of Team HK who are super supportive of us – you can catch them sporting our gear while they’re competing on the range this season.

In other news – if you are a single female like me and happen to be able to get to the SHOT Show, you’ll be on prime real estate. This is a place where you can catch plenty of eye candy along with the latest in gun technology. The male/female ratio definitely falls in our favor. What can I say? I like a man in uniform, even if he’s wearing civilian clothes!

We’ve got much more to tell you over the next few weeks about the newest and latest products at SHOT, so be sure and check back often!

How can I describe SHOT Show to someone who has never been here? Three words: Awesome. Overwhelming. Awesome.

Today was incredibly exciting and there’s too much to write about in one sitting, but we’ll hit the highlights for you:

After a great lunch with our friends at GunUp.com, we saw the lovely and amazing Olympic Champ Kim Rhode at the Otis Booth, which was monstrous. Always a treat running in to Ms. Rhode.

Natalie poses with Olympian Kim Rhode.

We also caught a glimpse of our fave, Julie Goloski-Golob, checking out the Prois Extreme Huntress event. Looking forward to catching up with her over the next few days.

We were super impressed by a test line Walther is rolling out soon specifically for the ladies. Shooters will be able to color-customize their Walther P22 firearms with grips and sights of their choosing. We love this idea! Very proud of Walther for making strides toward catering to the female shooters out there (and the occasional male who’s tired of just black, silver and camo!).

Walther P22 with Customizable Color

On a similar note, we had a great chat with the folks at Allen, a company that specializes in hunting & fishing accessories, about new product lines for women who carry concealed weapons. We told them the ladies are more interested in fun patterns and colors that express their personalities rather than boring black or predictable pink. Zebra stripes, anyone? While we were opining, we had the good fortune of meeting some super cool and fashionable ladies who just happen to own Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range in Georgia. Our favorite feature of the gun club’s lobby? Their scintillating chandeliers, of course! That’s officially the best shooting range decor we’ve ever come across. Can’t wait to hop on a plane and visit them very soon!

The ladies are always in the minority at SHOT show, but there’s no question that we are well represented this year.

For more pictures from the event, hop on over to our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Girls-Guide-to-Guns/181849826951), and after hitting “Like” of course, check out our SHOT Show – Day 1 photo album.

Also, the reception was horrible, but if you want up-to-the-minute action of what’s going on, follow our Twitter feed @GirlsGuide2Guns for tweets tagged #SHOTShow (https://twitter.com/girlsguide2guns)

… and we’re here to change that! We found a story titled “It’s natural for girls to play with dolls and boys to like guns” from an online publication called New Kerala. Some scientists did a study with chimpanzees that showed boy and girl chimps are programmed to like guns and dolls, respectively, and therefore the same goes with humans. We obviously feel differently. (Hey, wait a minute, does that mean there was a glitch in our programming if we, as women, like guns? No no no. Actually, I like to think we got enhanced programming on the assembly line!)

In any case, here’s the article. Let us know what y’all think in the comments:

Washington, Dec 21 : Girls like to play with dolls and boys love guns because they’re programmed to do so, not due to social conditioning, suggests a new study.

Scientists have found that young chimpanzees in the wild play both boy and girl games, much like their human counterparts.

They found that although both male and female chimps play with sticks, girl chimps treat sticks like dolls imitating their mothers as they care for infants.

The findings have suggested that girls play more with dolls than boys not because of sex-stereotyped socialization but because of ”biological predilections.”

“This is the first evidence of an animal species in the wild in which object play differs between males and females,” said Richard Wrangham of Harvard University.

Previous studies on captive monkeys had also suggested a biological influence on toy choice.

After 14 years of observation of the Kanyawara chimpanzee community in Kibale National Park, Uganda, researchers had found that chimpanzees use sticks in four main ways.

As probes to investigate holes potentially containing water or honey, as props or weapons in aggressive encounters, during solitary or social play, and in behaviour the researchers refer to as stick carrying.

“We thought that if the sticks are being treated like dolls, females would carry sticks more than males do and should stop carrying sticks when they have their own babies.

“We now know that both of these points are correct,” said Wrangham.

Meanwhile, scientists are not sure whether stick-carrying was a form of play for all chimp clans or was just a “social tradition that has sprung up” in the study group.

“This would suggest that chimpanzee behavioural traditions are even more like those in humans than previously thought,” added Wrangham.

The findings were published in the journal Current Biology.

We found a news article on USA Today that we just had to share with you. If you travel with your guns like we do, you might have known that between flying and the train, your only option was flying and checking your guns in your luggage (if your airline allowed it). Well, Amtrak has recently lifted the no firearms ban, and similar to airlines, you can now check your firearms and ammunition at train stations that offer checked baggage service. So if you plan to travel on Amtrak with your guns, be sure and check that your departure point has this service. It’s effective on December 15, 2010. If you want more information, check out the Amtrak “Firearms in Checked Baggage” page.

Amtrak lifts ban on guns

By Donna Leinwand, USA TODAY

Amtrak will allow passengers to transport unloaded guns on trains, reversing a decade-old ban in place since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The ban lifts Dec. 15.

Travelers can check firearms, including hand guns, starter pistols, rifles and shotguns, and up to 11 pounds of ammunition, at any train station that offers checked baggage service and if the travelers’ itinerary includes a train with a baggage car. Most big city train stations, including New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington, have checked baggage service.

The gun prohibition “was an overreaction” after 9/11, said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who proposed lifting the ban as part of a 2010 appropriations bill.

“The rule was not based on any facts or any reality, and was frankly punitive toward sportsman, hunters and gun owners,” Wicker said. “Amtrak was unable to accommodate hunters and sportsmen. They were forced to choose only air travel.”

The new rules bring train travel in line with air travel, where passengers are allowed to check firearms in an airplane’s baggage compartment, Wicker said.

Story continued Here.

We here at Girl’s Guide are kinda sorta freaking out about the newest book written by one of our all time faves, the “master of the thriller”, Mr. Brad Thor. The book is called The Athena Project and we are currently knee deep in it (it was released 11/23). How intensely, page-turningly addictive is this book? Well, let’s put it this way- the other girls had Twilight. We have The Athena Project.

Check out a review below.

Fox Force Four: Brad Thor’s The Athena Project

by Michael Walsh

Brad Thor’s new thriller, The Athena Project, may at first glance seem so far-fetched — the U.S. government is training a cadre of smokin’ hot, kick-ass female Delta Force ops; yeah, right — that you might be tempted to dismiss it as just another Hollywood fantasy. Not only would you be way wrong, you’d also be missing out on one of the year’s great action-adventures.

The plot of the novel (don’t worry, I won’t give anything away) involves a Delta team of four hot chicks, an Italian terrorist financier, long-lost Nazi technology and even a cameo appearance by Thor’s regular hero, Scot Harvath, who’s the lucky guy who supervises the Fox Force Four in the field. But there’s a lot more than simple plot going on in Brad’s work, as well as in the work of all the best thriller writers, and that’s what I want to talk about.

While it’s true that every story begins with the writer asking himself the question, “What if…?” in the thriller business there’s an added component, which is the factual basis for asking the question in the first place. That is, whether it’s Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy or the other terrific writers currently working the field, the story is generally firmly grounded in actual fact: some of this stuff you can’t make up, because it already exists.

Let me give you an example. The Athena Project opens with a reference to the DARPA program — the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, otherwise known as the toy department. Ian Fleming’s fictional “Q” — you remember him, the slightly nutty guy played in the movies by Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese — has nothing on DARPA, which is tasked with coming up with weapons of the future. Now you may think that a semi-obscure outfit that combines the military and the private sector, that is constantly rotating personnel to keep it fresh and imaginative, and which combines hard-headed science with imaginative science fiction is strictly the stuff of fiction. On the contrary, DARPA exists and does it exactly what Thor says it does.

Ditto the existence of the female Delta ops.

Lethal hotties have been a staple of Hollywood imagination for a while now — Angelina Jolie and Charlie’s Angels, take a bow! — and while it still taxes credulity that some of the cinematic lethal weapons could in fact take down a highly trained male opponent, Thor does not give us invulnerable Amazons who cannot bleed. His women can talk men, fashion and shoes with Carrie Bradshaw and the rest of the Sex and the City gals, and put tight shot groups through the bad guys, but they’re not Superwomen. Things go wrong, ops go tits-up, as it were, and (naturally) they’re being used as pawns in a much larger game — and we all know what happens to pawns.

Along the way, there’s plenty of action, some romance, some choice conspiracy theory involving the Denver Airport, and even a tinge of real horror as the enormity of what the Nazi scientists were up to becomes clear. The Athena team was first introduced in Thor’s novel, Foreign Influence, and it’s great to see the babes — Alex, Julie, Gretchen and Megan — get their own book, the first of what ought to be many more.

Because what Thor and his colleagues in the thriller-writing business (I count myself privileged to be among them) do is more than simply provide escapism or mere entertainment. Long ago, I found that I could tell the truth about contemporary life more effectively through “fiction” than non-fiction by grounding my work as realistically as possible and then sneaking in all sorts of interesting tidbits about what is really going on. Call it “faction.”

And this is precisely what Thor does, not only in his latest book, but throughout his work — his novels are meticulously researched, carefully plotted and fired at the reader with Delta force. As with the work of his semi-fictional special ops, there’s no wasted motion in a Brad Thor novel, just a cool, commanding professionalism that delivers in the end what was promised at the beginning, in spades.

Trust me, you’ll never look at a hot blonde with a sniper rifle quite the same way again.
