The perfect Pacific Northwest location, Clatskanie, OR, nestled between Seattle and Portland served as our staging ground for our first Packing Pretty/Girl’s Guide to Guns NRA Basic Pistol event.

No trip to the Pacific Northwest would be complete without a coffee run. I confess, there were several, but this was one of my faves: The Albina Press in Portland is a coffee snob’s paradise.

Another Portland must-see for me was the celebrated and epically huge Powell’s City of Books. In addition to an incalculable number of books, I found (drum roll, please) bacon bandages there.  @CamEdwards of Cam and Company on NRA radio and I have had extensive conversations about Tactical Bacon so I simply had to tweet it to him.

Time to get down to business and start the class hosted by the Clatskanie Gun Club. Gotta love a range with the Second Amendment painted on the wall!

Gracie and I tag teamed the lesson, with Gracie teaching the bulk of the material. That girl is a fantastic instructor.

Enough of the class room, let’s do some shooting!

The ladies’ firearm experience ranged from first timer to fairly proficient. My favorite thing to watch is a female shooter make that leap from feeling insecure with her firearm to feeling confident and competent. We saw several ladies experience just that and it was glorious!

One of the ladies brought her pink Kimber. I always love to see pink on the firing line! It just makes everything a little more fun.

After we finished up our time in the range, we headed back to the classroom to demonstrate how to keep your firearm clean. The innovative products donated by OTIS made the gun cleaning section of the class super easy. Check out our interview with Doreen Garrett, founder of OTIS gun cleaning systems.

I live in LA where I am a bit more used to a ‘have your people call my people and well do lunch sometime’ mentality, so I was a little surprised when plans actually started to materialize. But now here we are at a private ranch in Missouri shooting a buffet of Berettas and Smith&Wessons and just generally enjoying one anothers company.

Vital stats so far:

1 lost iPhone

1 dunked iPhone

3 bug bites (one on my rear end.)

1 small prank that I can’t tell you about yet (heehee)

It was a big day in gun world this week, on March 7, when Julie Golob appeared on Top Guns. Julie, always poised under whatever pressure is thrown at her at the time, explained three competition guns made by the company she represents (Smith & Wesson), talked about the guns’  histories and capabilities and then, shot them to demonstrate the firepower and attributes. I just want to know, what is her choice for antiperspirant? Seriously, it must be good.

And then, came the announcement that Jessie Duff will be the captain of Taurus’s new shooting team. And I’m just going to write it. A lot of us are wondering if Taurus will modify its trigger for her on their guns, or if this means it will improve all its triggers on all its guns — which we hope will be the case. (And remember, this is a blog.)

Of course, at SHOT Show, I not only spent some time with Julie at her booth as she signed autograph after autograph, I also talked with GLOCK’s team leader Randi Rogers. She is very much in command of the reputation of the gun and works very closely with teammate Tori Nonaka, and mentors her.

Shooting clubs have great aim for charity

Three groups raise $130,000 in just one year

The result shouldn’t be surprising.

Take folks who excel at hitting targets – especially moving ones – and combine their favorite sport with a charitable fundraiser.

It sounds something like “bang” and “cha-ching.”

Trap shooters at three clubs in southeastern Wisconsin contributed more than $130,000 to cancer research and programs in 2011.

“You find a group with the dedication that these clubs have and you know you’ll be successful,” said Cheryl Sykora of Women for MACC.

Since 1990, the Hartford Conservation and Gun Club has held the Shoot For A Cure Gene Johann Memorial Trapshoot to Fight Childhood Cancer.

The event is named after a club member who died from colon cancer at age 44. Hartford has partnered with Women for MACC to benefit Milwaukee Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC Fund).

Kevin Rosenbaum of Hartford, who co-chaired the 2011 event with Gary DeSmidt, said Johann had lots of plans that “never got a chance.”

In the months after Johann lost his battle with cancer in 1990, members at the Hartford club decided to turn mourning into a course of action. And not just to help themselves cope, but for a larger goal.

“Gene was an avid trap shooter, participating in leagues year-round,” Rosenbaum said. “It seemed logical to try to honor him with a charity trap shoot.”

The club’s cancer fundraising efforts expanded a couple years ago with the addition of Michael King 3-D Archery Shoot.

The two events this year raised $62,855, pushing the club’s cumulative contribution to Women for MACC to $1.13 million.
