For brandy new shooters I prefer to take the first steps outside of the range, usually at home, using an airsoft pistol that closely resembles the handgun they'll be firing when we get to the range. It's a lower stress way, in a more relaxed and comfortable setting, to introduce them to the 4 safety rules and go over how to operate all the functions and proper holds and stances.

Hi! I am 64, a woman, and l need to find firearm instruction myself, in Eugene, Oregon, Lane County. there is a" Baron's Den" that helps with 8- hr. classes, only to get your carrying license. But l just need basic instruction, with my 38. Smith & Wesson, ladies 'model revolver,(my mom left to me) cause l am really rusty as far as shooting practice goes. And it's been a long time. If any of you Know of classes and instruction, in Eugene, or Springfield, OR, I'd be glad to get the info.. I just joined the NRA, online ,and now I want to learn how to protect myself. women my age NEED to know that! thanks, "doreet" in, Eugene, OR

'Auntie', go look at https://www.nrainstructors.org/searchcourse.aspx to find an NRA course near you. Visit any courses you find to see if their instructors make you feel comfortable. Look for a course that includes shooting if you can, and avoid any that don't feel like a good fit. Good luck!

My wife(pretty, petite, and professional) asked me to teach her to shoot earlier this week after an attempted break-in at a neighbor's house over the weekend. She grew up around guns and recalls shooting a .22lr a couple times with her father but had never handled a semi-auto handgun, which happens to be what I keep handy in biometric safes in the house. She knows "the 4 rules" and apparently must have been listening to at least some of the firearms related banter I seem to spew to her as if she cared. I wasted no time and agreed to take her out the following afternoon. That evening I stressed safety, went over basic weapon manipulation, sight picture, and had a little dry fire session. The next day she shot my Glock 19 and 26(both 9mm for those unfamiliar) and I'm pleased to report that she was able to keep all her rounds on the 12" Shoot•N•C targets I had pasted from 7 yards. Needless to say I was very proud of her and she's looking forward to getting out again soon. I see another Glock19 purchase in my future!!

I prefer to start with dry fire or snap caps, make sure the person is comfortable with the fire arm (right fit easy to handle), go over range safety ( no accidental discharge). Then start the shooting experience.

Great advise! The Range at Lake Norman hosts a Ladies Night once a month, most of the attendees are new to shooting. The Range instructors teach each new shooter exactly as described above, and all of them, without fail, have a GREAT first shooting experience, almost all of them come back again! We are so encouraged there are so many women coming into the sport!

Two of the people I taught to shoot were really apprehensive so for that first shot I wrapped my hands gently around theirs on the grip of the .22 pistol. Once one shot was fired neither had a problem and enjoyed themselves.

That is well written, yet simple and easy to understand advice. I really like the way that you have conveyed this. I teach people how to shoot any time I have a chance. I believe everyone should learn to shoot a gun and know how to defend themselves.
