Coolest latest gadgets — U.S. Army begins using radio controlled Smart Bullets — – New electronic technology gadgets
Although development started over a year ago, the U.S. Army revealed today, that they will begin handing out the XM25 rifle later this month in Afghanistan.
The XM25 uses smart bullets, which are laser-guided, radio-controlled and carry an onboard CPU.
According to the bullet’s maker, Alliant Techsystems, each bullet has a small magnetic transducer that interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, generating a tiny alternating current every time it spins as it speeds toward the target.
Measured against the gun’s specially calibrated rifling, this means the bullet can keep track of how far it has traveled in real time.
The rifle’s gunsight uses a laser rangefinder to determine the exact distance to the enemy, after which the soldier can add or subtract up to 3 metres from that distance to enable the bullets to clear the barrier from which the enemy is hiding behind and explode above or beside the target.
