Army Tests New Uniform for Women

Ok, so it doesn’t quite pass as fashion, but kudos to the Army for finally realizing that they should probably take a second look at their uniforms for women. Only a few years late, but what do you expect from an organization primarily dominated by dudes. Bless their hearts, they just don’t think about these things. Check out the article below found on Military.com.

BAMBERG, Germany — The Army is testing a new combat uniform designed to better fit female Soldiers. The current uniforms don’t fit female Soldiers as well as the Army would like, according to Lt. Col. Mike Sloane. Sloane is the product manager for Soldier clothing and individual equipment at PEO Soldier. Most of the improvements are being made in the sizing of the uniforms, such as narrowing the shoulder width or adjusting sleeve lengths. Additionally, the new uniform pants will include an elastic waistband.
The new uniforms should be available in the next two to three years, according to Maj. Sequana Robinson, the assistant product manager for uniforms at Program Executive Office Soldier. “It is not a form-fitting uniform — it does not show off any curves or anything,” Robinson said. “It is just a better fit for the female body. It sets off a more professional look.”
Changes to the uniform were made following recommendations of female Soldiers during preliminary testing and research phases made by the PEO team.
“The biggest issue that a majority of females have with the current ACU is that the uniform was not designed for a female’s body,” said Staff Sgt. Jessika Malott, stationed at Fort Meade, Md. “The cut of the uniform and a female’s body type usually leaves us looking like a duffel bag.”
“Women have so many different shapes and sizes, we’re as not as ‘straight’ as men are,” said Robinson.

Boy, I sure am glad to see this. I’m not military, but I am a hunter and it’s nice to know that military camo will soon be a better-fitting option for women. Wow, we might have almost as many choices as men!
OK, not really, but it is getting better.
I am in the military (AF)and our uniforms went through similar changes and I have to say, I hate them. When trying to find my fit, I tried on any number of combination of the blouse and trousers and had to settle for the Least uncomfortable. The blouse is too narrow at the shoulders confining movement. The bust-waist-hip ratio is disproportionate. The elastic band in the waist of the trousers is unforgiving and too personal. I took the pant to see if I could have them removed and the lady said that she would have to completely deconstruct the build-up and couldn’t guarantee that it would go back together. I went back to the male issue as did several of my female co-workers. I can only hope the Army got it right…
