Local Women Learn to Protect Themselves

Obviously, we love it when a woman decides to learn more about guns whether out of mere curiosity, a longing to get to know the men in her life better, or any other personal reason she might have. But the reality is that guns are good for protection, too. And the majority of the time, the mere thought that you have a gun, whether or not you plan to use it, is enough to ward off any criminals. Well, we found a great article from the White Mountain Independent on the subject. Here’s an excerpt with a link to the full article:
WHITE MOUNTAINS. According to the Department of Justice, three of four women will experience at least one violent crime. Various studies have proven just displaying a firearm will scare off a high percentage of offenders.
There are roughly 307 million people in the United States as of 2009. Approximately 16,272 murders were committed in 2008 and about 67 percentage for those were committed with firearms. A study published in 2000 by the Journal of Quantitative Criminology reported that civilians use guns to defend themselves at least 989,883 times a year.
There are no hard and fast figures on the number of women gun owners, but the estimates by various gun organizations are that the number is over 17 million and growing.
Women are becoming gun owners and learning to shoot in larger numbers than ever before. The old methods of protecting yourself, such as blowing a whistle, learning martial arts, and using things like pepper spray and mace, aren’t enough to help women feel safe anymore.
